Medical Laboratory Technician

DUTIES INCLUDE:
Verifies identity of patient Collects blood specimen with minimal discomfort to the patient using standard phlebotomy techniques. Labels samples accurately, centrifuges and aliquots samples as needed. Performs a full range of laboratory testing and examination of blood, urine, body fluids and other specimen. Packages laboratory specimen for pick up and shipment to reference laboratories. Perform and evaluates quality control and proficiency testing samples according to laboratory standard operating procedures. Records laboratory data on charts, logs or computerized forms. Verifies accurate instrument functioning, troubleshoots instrument malfunctions, and acts on any quality control shifts, trends or out of range results. Identifies unusual results or conditions which may cause erroneous results (instrument malfunctions, interfering substances, faulty operating parameters, or non-standard test procedure used). Ensures that laboratory areas are stocked, maintains appropriate inventories, and notifies appropriate personnel when supplies need to be ordered. Maintains work area in a clean and safe condition according to agency or accreditation requirements. Performs non-routine testing as required:
performs complex analyses and infrequently requested tests which may include transfusion reaction work-up, manual chemistry methods, body fluid analysis with manual differential, or special coagulation tests. Work Schedule:

Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. Specialized
Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood-banking) and preparing report of findings or technical support work in a closely related field (e.g.,biological laboratory technician work) that requires application of the methods and techniques, in performing full range of testing and examination procedures in the areas described in the duties above. OR, Education:
Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have one (1) full year of graduate education where it is directly related to the work of this position. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position:
Compliance Diagnostic Medical Testing Operation of Equipment/Machinery Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note:
A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements:
The work requires regular and recurring standing to operate various laboratory equipment; walking between different sections of the laboratory and to inpatient floors and outpatient clinic areas in the hospital; and reaching and bending to obtain supplies and specimens and to operate instruments. Occasionally lifts heavy containers of reagents (30-50 lbs). Manual dexterity is necessary to perform intricate procedures and maintain operate equipment. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
