Nurse Practitioner (Occupational Health Clinic)
The OHNP is a professional nurse with advanced clinical knowledge and competence to function in a variety of roles. The OHNP evaluates the interactions between employees' work and health in the workplace. With administrative oversight by the Division Officer of Occupational Medicine, the OHNP provides health care services and consultation to VA civilian employees, students, and active duty staff of the FHCC facility. The OHNP holds clinical privileges and practices in collaboration with the Occupational Health Physician and the Occupational Health (OH) team. The incumbent possesses a general knowledge of the work environment, including worksite operations; familiarity with the toxic properties of materials used by the employees as well as the potential hazards and stressors of work processes and jobs or tasks. The incumbent also maintains current knowledge of the worker's compensation laws; local state and federal regulatory requirements; and systems for maintaining health records. The activities of this position include identifying at risk employees through comprehensive evaluation and screening, interpretation of Industrial Hygiene exposure assessments, and diagnosis and treatment of work-related injury/illness and exposures, to include decisions and limitations for returning affected employees to full or partial work capacity. The activities of this position also include documentation in the electronic medical record system used by the OH, planning and providing comprehensive workman's compensation consultation to employees and supervisors, and routine evaluation of workman's compensation programs including collaboration with the workers compensation administration on specific cases. The OHNP will also actively participate in any epidemic or pandemic responses by assisting with telephone triage, providing care to sick employees, evaluating employees who are returning to work after the infection and updating the employee health tracker as appropriate. In addition, the OHNP communicates with the workers and managers at all levels, while maintaining the confidentiality between Occupational Health and the employees as required by the OSHA, professional ethics codes, and individual state privacy acts, providing the management with only the necessary information to make an informed and competent decision on occupational health and safety issues. The Advance Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) is accountable for adhering to the established policies, standard of care, and standards of practice, demonstrating leadership in a service as a role model. The APRN, as a member of the department, communicates with other health care providers in the division as well as with other healthcare providers and ancillary staff throughout the clinic and FHCC in order to assure continuity of care for patients seen at the Occupational Health Clinics. The APRN will be responsive to patient needs, ensuring customer satisfaction, which reflects an understanding of age specific and developmental needs as demonstrated by fulfilling the following:
The Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner/APRN provides direct patient care:
Conducts a comprehensive assessment to determine patient's nature and degree of health care problems. Assesses and interprets patient data, differentiating between normal and abnormal findings, formulating differential diagnoses. Develops appropriate diagnosis and treatment plans. Prescribes and performs selected laboratory and other diagnostic tests, treatment, referrals, and consultations deemed pertinent as defined in the individual clinical privileges. Participates in management of patients with acute and chronic diseases of other health problems, as well as preventive health when appropriate. Through health teaching, increases patient and family understanding of disease processes, self-care and treatment plan. Ensures instruction to the patient based on identified learning needs. Assesses patient health status expectations. Reviews patient management with the physician preceptors and/or Occupational Medicine Physician as appropriate. Coordinate patient appointments and procedural instructions, follow-up and report test results to the appropriate providers. Maintains up-to-date records of all patient interactions to document care provided and facilitates intervention of various other health care providers. Strives to meet productivity and performance measurements as established by the work center leadership. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript.
